The Marlins beat the Mets 7-5 to take the rubber game of the series.  They knocked the Mets out of first place, handed Mike Plefrey his first loss since the end of May, and are now just a game and a half out of first.  

Starter Josh Johnson, making just his fourth start since coming back from Tommy John surgery finally got his first win of the season.  The Marlins are now 4-0 when Johnson has started for them.  In 6.2 innings pitched, Johnson allowed four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two.  Not only did he pitch well but Johnson hit a RBI double in the fourth inning.  

The Marlins offense really broke out in the fourth inning.  With the Mets leading 1-0, Jeremy Hermida tripled to lead off the inning.  Jorge Cantu singled to center allowing Hermida to score and tie the game.  Mike Pelfrey then retired to get Dan Uggla and Mike Jacobs.  It was with two outs that the Marlins did the real damage.  Cody Ross trippled to right, scoring Cantu from first.  John Baker doubled to center field, scoring Ross from third.  Baker would score on Josh Johnson’s double to center.  Hanley Ramirez grounded out to second to end the inning, but the Marlins would lead the game 5-1.  The Mets looked like they would make a run at tying up the game when Damion Easley hit a three run homer in the top of the seventh, however Dan Uggla added two insurance runs with he hit a two run homer off Joe Smith in the bottom of the eighth.  Uggla now holds the record for most homeruns by a second baseman in his first three years as a starter.  The Mets would add one more in the top of the ninth, but the Marlins hold on to win 7-5. 

The Colorado Rockies come to town for a four game set.  Anibal Sanchez will make his first start of the season.  Game time is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

The Marlins took the first of three against the New York Mets 7-3 on Monday night.  The Marlins are in the thick of it for the seat atop of the NL East and just pulled to one game out of first with the win.

Ricky Nolasco started the game for the Marlins.  He pitched six innings giving up two runs on seven hits, he did not walk anyone and struck out eight.  The winning pitcher was Doug Waechter who worked just one inning of relief.  He did give up an earned run, but was the pitcher of record when the Marlins took the lead. 

The Marlins played sloppy in the field and it cost them a couple of runs early in the game, Dan Uggla was charged with only one error, but it was much worse than just that one play.  Cody Ross misjudged a ball that went over his head, and Uggla made an errant throw on the back end of what should have been a double play, however, because you can’t assume the double play, he was not charged with an error.  

The Marlins’ offense took advantage of the Mets’ terrible pitching to walk away with a victory.  John Baker homered in the fifth inning to make the score 2-1, and the Marlins tied the score at two in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Cody Ross.  The Marlins were down by a run in the bottom of the eighth, when Josh Willingham doubled to left to lead off the inning and scored on a single to center by Dan Uggla, Uggla  advanced to third on a single by Wes Helms.  John Baker got credit for a bunt single that scored Uggla, and loaded the bases.  Mets reliever Scott Schoeneweis then retired both Alfredo Amezega and Hanley Ramirez before facing pinch hitter Robert Andino, Schoeneweis threw a wild pitch that scored Helms and moved the other two runners into scoring postion.  Andino then hit a two run double to center, and would advance to third on Schoeneweis’ second wild pitch of the inning but was stranded there when Jorge Cantu grounded out to end the inning.   

The Marlins will have on the mound Scott Olsen (6-5 4.07 era).  The Mets will counter with Oliver Perez (6-6 4.15 era).  Game time is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

I wasn’t sure what my title was going to be, this one or “Gregg Blows Another One”. The Florida Marlins got 7 gutty innings from Ricky Nolasco and a ninth inning 3 run double from Dan Uggla to defeat Oakland and take game two of a three game set. But they needed a game saving diving stop at first base by Jorge Cantu to preserve the win.

Nolasco was his usual solid self, allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings and giving his team a chance to win. But it was Renyel Pinto who got the win by pitching a scoreless eighth before turning it over to closer Kevin Gregg. The Marlins had just scored three times in the top of the ninth, a three run double to left by Dan Uggla, who the A’s have got to be sick of, being the key hit. As they have done seemingly all year, the Marlins battled back from behind in this game, getting a key HR once again, this time by their own Toy Cannon, Cody Ross. Ross’ homer in the top of the eighth tied the game at 3-3.

So the stage was set for Kevin Gregg in the bottom of the ninth to come in and nail down the win. Back in the late 70s, the Baltimore Orioles had a relief pitcher named Don Stanhouse. Earl Weaver called him “Full Pack” because he’d go through a full pack of cigarettes up in the tunnel behind the dugout, sweating out a Stanhouse save. He did get the save more often than not, but it was never easy. Kevin Gregg is becoming the Marlins’ Stanhouse, as it seems his every save is an adventure. Last night was a good example. Given a three run lead, Gregg gave up some scratch hits and some walks, and suddenly it was bases loaded, 6-4, as the As had already plated one run, and Gregg facing Ryan Sweeney. Sweeney hit a sharp grounder down the fist baseline headed for the right field corner, but Jorge Cantu dived, made the stop and the toss to Gregg covering for the final out.

The win tonight, coupled with the Phillies fourth straight loss, leaves the Marlins just one game out in the eastern division of the National League. They conclude the road trip tomorrow.

The Florida Marlins had an awesome comeback in the top of the ninth inning as they came back from a 6-0 defecit to tie the game at 6-6.  It wasn’t enough however as the Marlins still lost the game in ten innings to the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 7-6.

Renyel Pinto gave up a rbi single in the tenth inning to take the loss for the Marlins.  None of the Marlins pitchers had that good of a night as Ricky Nolasco gave up two runs, Logan Kensing gave up one run, Justin Miller gave up three runs.

At the plate for the Marlins, Cody Ross had the big hit which was a three run home run in the ninth inning that tied the game.   Matt Treanor had two rbi and Luis Gonzalez had one rbi.

The Florida Marlins were not able to beat the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night as they lost 5-3.  The Marlins tried coming back but were only able to score one run in the eighth inning when they were needed to score three or four.

Mark Hendrickson pitched five innings and gave up eight hits and four runs to take the loss.  Hendrickson is now 5-2 on the season.  Doug Waechter gave up two hits and one run as he pitched in relief as well.  Matt Lindstrom pitched a scoreless inning after Waechter left the game.

Cody Ross had a solo home run in the eighth inning for the Marlins.  The other rbi’s for the Marlins came in the fifth and seventh innings.  In the fifth inning, Hanley Ramirez had a sac fly to score a run and then in the seventh inning, Dan Uggla had a rbi single to center field.

The Marlins are now 23-16 on the season.  I see them bouncing back tomorrow and picking up their 24th win of the season.  Marlins Blog

Marlins pitcher Kevin Gregg gave up two runs in the top of the ninth inning as the Marlins lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Thursday afternoon.  The game was tied 3-3 heading into the inning, but Gregg couldn’t get the job done to give the Marlins hitters a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning.

Burke Badenhop started the game for the Marlins and pitched six innings.  Badenhop gave up five hits and three runs but pitched well enough to keep the Marlins in the game.  It’s too bad there wasn’t more offensive production so Badenhop could have picked up the win.

Cody Ross hit is first home run of the season in the game as he went deep in the fifth inning to score two runs.  Hanley Ramirez also had a RBI double in the third inning.

The Marlins are now 15-13 on the season as they try to stay close to the top of the divisonal standings.

The Florida Marlins won 6-1 over the Washington Nationals on Sunday putting the Marlins as 11-7 for the year leading the National League East.  With a couple of big hits and with runs starting in the bottom of the first, the Marlins were ready to get another win at home.

Scott Olsen started off the night for the Marlins pitching seven innings and giving
up only three hits and one run.  With the win Olsen’s record is now 3-0 on the season.  He was relieved by Justin Miller, Taylor Tankersley, and Kevin Gregg to finish off the Nationals for
the night.

It was a night of big hits with Hanley Ramirez hitting two home runs putting him at five for the season and picking up his 14th RBI.  Matt Treanor, Jorge Cantu, Dan Uggla, and Cody Ross all had doubles tonight as well. 

The Marlins are done with the Nationals and are now going on the road for a 7 game road trip starting off in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

The Florida Marlins opened up Spring Training with a 16-3 clubbing of the Baltimore Orioles.

Sergio Mitre started on the mound for the Marlins but only lasted three batters as he gave up two walks, and and let another batter reach on an error.  Mitre left after having some tightness in his pitching elbow.  Probably just some standard spring training soreness.

As Mitre left the game, Andrew Miller came in and had to get an inning ending double play to get out of trouble.  From there though, it was all Marlins as the offense kicked into high gear.

Hanley Ramirez walked, stole two bases and scored on a throwing error in the first inning. Left fielder Brett Carroll delivered a two-run single in the second and another run-scoring single in the sixth, and Cody Ross drilled a three-run home run in the fourth. Alejandro De Aza capped the scoring by belting a grand slam in the ninth inning.
