The Giants have acquired Cody Ross from the Florida Marlins after putting in a waiver claim on the outfielder, though it seems it was never the team's intention to add Ross to the roster when they made the claim. It is believed that San Francisco's primary motivation to place a claim was to block him from the first-place Padres. But the move backfired in a way, as Ross now joins an overcrowded Giants outfield. The team has already acquired Pat Burrell and Jose Guillen during the season, to go along with Aubrey Huff, Aaron Rowand and Andres Torres.
