John Buck's first homer since opening day got the Florida Marlins off to furious start against the Cincinnati Reds. Buck hit a three-run home run in Florida's five-run first inning and the Marlins held on for a 7-6 win over the Reds on Friday night. Buck was a big free agent signing for the Marlins in the offseason, but he entered the game with a .208 average and an 0-for-12 slump.

Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 24 games in the fourth inning, then homered in the 10th Wednesday to help the Los Angeles Dodgers salvage the final game of their three-game series against Florida, 5-4. Outfielder Gabe Gross has decided to retire after seven major league seasons, the Dothan (Ala.) Eagle reported. His "heart wasn't into it" anymore, he told the newspaper. Gross, 31, played for Toronto, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay and Oakland in his career.
